VEX Nationals

Wow! What an amazing experience we had using VEX this year. The buzz started when we presented to Mr Kennedy and Miss Holder about VEX and why we needed it at C.S.N.S. They said yes and so we begun learning how to build the robot, code and drive our VEX machine. We enjoyed our first competition at Regionals and then at Nationals we came an amazing 4th place out of 29 teams!

Here is Josh and Ben competing in the driving skills competition.

Eating lunch and competing.

We stood out in our CSNS tops!

Thanks to Mr Kennedy and Miss Holder for allowing us to compete, and to Miss G and Mr R for giving us time on our FastTrack to do VEX.

Hoisting the Flag Ceremony NZ

In New Zealand there are several alternative flags to the one we have now. To celebrate our 5 options, 5 Palmerston North schools, that were around in the time our original flag was chosen came to hoist the flags. The schools there were: P.N.B.H.S., P.N.G.H.S., P.N.I.N.S., Central Normal, and ours, C.S.N.S. A few of us had to dress in Victorian Era clothes, and the six people from each school got educated in the history of our current NZ flag how it evolved from the Union Jack.

Paper Challenge

After the balloon cars testing our ability to work as a team, we are back again! But this time it's a paper challenge. Some it finding easy, others finding hard. We are currently learning about 'The Learning Pit'! As you see below, the learning pit tests how we learn. The picture shows that you do fail and that failing is a good thing! When we went to Mind Lab, we found out that FAIL can stand for First Attempt In Learning. We believe that you have to be in the learning pit to learn. And even if it is extremely hard, we all eventually get out of of the learning pit and have that "EUREKA!!" moment. For example, have you ever been on the trampoline attempting to do a flip for weeks, months and even years and then finally do the flip!? If so, it feels so good, doesn't it? In conclusion, we all enjoy these technology challenges and learning about the learning pit! :)

Did you know, in 2028...

Today we watched this video 'Did you know, in 2028...' and recorded what we thought and what we it made us wonder.

These were some of our wonderings...

I wonder...
  • How they know this will happen?
  • How many jobs will be available?
  • Will the world really change that much in the next 13 years?
  • What people will do if technology does everything?
  • Will we be like robots?
  • How much pollution is there going to be?
  • If there will be any space left on earth?
  • Will there still be computers?
  • What jobs we might have?
  • Will we use water from Mars? Does it have oxygen in it?
  • If we will still have cars?
  • How we will earn money?
  • Will artificial technology be safe, especially around young children... What if it glitches?
  • How we will afford to have houses and buy food if our jobs are replaced with artificial intelligence?
  • If 3D printing will take over the need for shops?
  • If there will be viruses that effect this kind of life?
  • Will Apple still be around?
  • What environmental problems there will be?
  • Will there still be conversations?
  • How will we be learning?

Watch the video and see what questions you have... What do you think the world will be like in 2028?

Selfies all the way

Here is a selfie that we took on the bus to Mind Lab  :)

Trip to Mind Lab

This term in GRi11 we have been learning about businesses. We split up into small groups and made products for real money. The reason we have been selling our products for real money is because we have been raising to go to The Mind Lab in Petone (just out of Wellington).

At Mind Lab we did 3D printing, stop motion animation, makeys makeys, scribble bots and we also made motorised cars out of certain materials.

We had to take the bus to Petone ,which was good because us kids got to catch up on some sleep. We had to be at school by 7.45am so that we would not miss the bus and then we got back at 5.30.

Even though it was raining in Petone, and it was a long long day, all of the GRi11ers had a great day and there was no part of the day where people got bored. We had a great day at Mind Lab. We would love one here in Palmerston North.
