GRi11 2.0 Table Tennis

Welcome back to Term 3!
GRi11 2.0 had their first sport rotation with Matt yesterday. Matt is from Table Tennis Manawatu. He taught us 'The Shake Hand Grip'.

The Shake Hand Grip is when you place your index across the top bit of the handle and your thumb behind (a little bit goes on the paddle). Your bottom three fingers go around the Table Tennis handle loosely to support your grip.

We also learned how to play a forehand and backhand. Forehand is when your thumb is pointing away from you (hit the ball with that side of the paddle). Backhand is when your index finger is pointing away from you (hit the ball with that side of the paddle).

We had to balance the ball on our paddle, then bounce the ball on the forehand and the backhand sides of our paddle to practice these skills. Then we practiced playing on the tables.
Matt also taught us how to serve. There are four steps to completing a proper Table Tennis sevre.
  1. The server has to be behind the white line.
  2. Present the ball to your opponent and pause.
  3. Throw the ball up (16cm) before you hit it.
  4. The ball has to bounce once on your side before it goes over the net.
Now you can be a pro server!

Mr R's Selfies

Two weeks ago Yutong came back from overseas and brought a selfie-stick for Miss G and Mr R as a gift. Last week Mr R decided to test his out whilst we were creating our skits. Here are the results.

Stay tuned for Miss G's selfies.

Football Competition

On Tuesday our Sports Coaches Luke and Tyler B ran a Football Competition. It involved Juggling, Dribbling and a Longest Kick comp.

There were 60 kids involved and as usual GRi11 2.0 was well represented and ended up winning each of the 3 categories!!!
Juggling Comp - Tyler G
Dribbling Comp - Dom
Longest Kick - Jaeziah

Jaeziah, Dom and Tyler G with their prizes!

CAD and 3D Printing

Today in GRi11 2.0 we learnt how to use Tinkercad and a design a 3D keyring. Firstly we signed into our classroom called 'GRi11 Ignite' on a  website called Project Ignite. We worked through some set lessons to learn the basics of CAD (computer aided design).

After we mastered the basics we started on designing our 3D Keyring.

Tinkercad was really easy to use but getting the right measurements was hard. As pointed out by our teachers we had to use a lot of mathematical knowledge (measurement, units of measurement, 3D shapes, Rotation and scale).
Once we finished our design we uploaded them as an STL. file to a shared folder in Google Drive. Then we used the 3D printer software (UP) to get them ready for printing.

Aisha and Jack C were the first to get their's printed, but Mr R made an error when setting the scale. He clearly needs to attend a workshop on scale and measurement. After three and half hours the 3D printing finished and we were pumped!

We will write another post and show you some of our finished keyring's next week.

Inter-school Cross Country

On Thursday Baxter, Costa, Amber, Milla and Dorothy from GRi11 2.0 were part of the CSNS Inter-school Cross Country team.

The race was held on the same farm as our school cross country but with some challenging additions. There were two deep creeks,  a steep downhill through the forrest and some slippery mud patches (shoe catchers) to navigate.

All of our GRi11 2.0 kids did us proud. They showed a Go For Gold attitude and represented our school to the best their abilities.

The Year 6 Boys have a pre-race huddle.

The Year 6 Boys pose after their race.

The Year 6 Girls are all smiles after finishing.

Congratulations to Amber for winning a Bronze medal. She came third out of 120 Year 6 girls.

Handball Tournament

On Tuesday our Sports Coaches Cole and Jacob organised a Handball Tournament at school during lunchtime. There were approximately 80 Year 4-6 playing on 16 courts.

Cole and Jacob set the rules, organised the referees and handed out prizes. They learnt a lot about running a sports tournament and the stress involved.

The final 4 consisted of 3 GRi11 2.0 kids, Van, Dom and Leevi. In an intense and thrilling contest Dom finished the 5 minute final in the King position.

Van, Dom, Leevi and Lukey celebrate with Cole and Jacob after the final.

2016 School Cross Country Writing

After completing the gruelling school cross country we wrote about our experiences. We could choose to write a recount, a letter, an argument, a narrative, a report or an explanation. Below are a few examples of our writing.
Cross Country Recount
By Gihara Fernando

The day was here, it was finally cross country. I had a shiver down my spine. It was one of the days I feared the most. It was the ninth of June and we were heading to the Dransfield’s farm.

The course was 3 kilometres and I was aiming to at least get in the top 15. Bang !!!The race started. It was a tough hard course with mud pits all around. There were lots of steep hills and big hills to climb up. I was running up the hill as fast as a Jaguar.

I was on a big gravel road breathing heavily. I sprinted my hardest as I could see the finish line. I could hear all the cheering crowd as the first girl came in from the run. I sprinted to the finish line. I got my points and put it in takahe box. I Was so proud of myself for finishing the cross country. I achieved my goal, I came 12th. Yay!!

Thank You Letter

Dear Mrs Langley,
Thank you very much for all your hard work in organising the Cross Country for Years 3-6. I know it is a big job but you and Mrs Tremain are really good at it.

I liked the course. It was interesting to run down and up hills. I loved running through the mud that was my favourite thing. I nearly slipped over heaps of time. Luckily I didn’t. This year I didn’t even get tired. I got 38th place.

It would be really good if we could have the Cross Country on a farm every year. Thanks a lot for your hard work.

The C.S.N.S. Cross Country 2016 Recount

By Jaeziah Tuimana

9th June 2016 was the date that we had the cross-country at the Dransfields farm. Some of the boys and girls from Grill 2.0 got stuck behind because we didn’t have enough buses. So while we waited for a bus we decided to have some fun. But when the bus finally came we all hopped in and went to the farm.

When we arrived everybody was sitting and waiting for us to start the first race . When we sat down the teachers said “Yr 3 girls race in 5 minutes”. When the first race started most of us went and watched them race up the hill and disappear behind the hill. All of the other races were exactly like that.

After waiting through 7 races they announced it was the yr 6 boys “Finally” I said in joy. But then when we got there they said “Just wait because we don’t want 4 races on the field so just wait for the yr 5 girls to finish”.  When they all finished we went and got ready by running up and down a little hill and did some stretching.

After that we lined up at the start line. 3, 2, 1, GO! We all sprinted up the hill and went down. On the way down I nearly face planted but I kept up and ran down the whole way. I caught up to Liam and went up the muddy hill. We turned right,  stepped over a little ditch and then turned left to a big hill. Once I got up the hill I saw Mr R who said he would be halfway so I kept a jog going and stayed like that till Mr R and then walked a little. I saw what was up ahead and started jogging again.

I saw a mud puddle and slid through it and didn’t slip unlike other people. But when I saw what was left I thought I’m just going to run as hard as I can. So I did until I got to the hay bales near the forest and the teacher said to me “Run as hard as you can”. So then I Jogged and waited till the opportune moment to sprint. Then at the final length I sprinted as hard as I could. Me and Liam were neck and neck the whole race and I beat him by a hair for 33 points. YES!

After that big day we packed our bags hopped onto the bus and went back to school for Lunch.

Jaeziah going for gold.

Traditional Teaching Style (TTS)

I Hate Traditional Teaching Style!
By Anneka Cai

NOO! It was a Tuesday morning and everyone was gathered outside the classroom. I was wondering what everyone was doing and I pushed through the crowd and saw that the classroom had been transformed into a horror movie. The tables were put in lines and there were stickers that had our names on them. Then I saw a sign that said “DO NOT COME IN UNTIL 8:50am.” I was terrified.

The teachers started to walk down the quad, dressed in clothing that looked like it was from the 1980s. Mr Robertson shouted “ LINE UP HERE NOW!” The whole class was horrified. Like minions we scattered across the court and lined up in boy and girl lines.

When we got into the classroom the first thing I saw was piles of math books, dictionaries and more dictionaries! When we got seated in our seats the teachers told us to stand up and sing the National Anthem. The class stood up and sang. After that the teachers shouted at us and gave us glares .”I couldn't wait to get home“ I thought.

The National Anthem made me laugh for some reason and Miss Gordon just gave me the evil stare. Later we did some simple Maths. Our teachers told us to grab a textbook that suited our math stages, I was a stage 7 and I went to grab a book. The whiteboard said that we had to turn to page 52 on our Maths Books. On page 52 everything was a piece of cake. Like an example is… order 100, 350, 435, 120 from smallest to biggest, and I had most things done in no time.

When Maths was done we still had to do; Dictation, Adjectives from a textbook, Dictionary Skills (Writing out the dictionary), Chanting, and Handwriting.

It seemed like that would take for hours, and that meant we had more WORK not learning to do.

Finally it was morning tea, Mr Robertson told us to get one thing out of our lunchbox and when we were about to eat he said “ BITE” …. “CHEW!” I was so hungry afterwards. When we got TOLD what to play and who with. It was horrible, and our group had to do air netball, which is when you pretend to play netball (without a netball).

After the bell rang the teachers transformed back into their normal self, I actually thought our teachers had hit their heads on a rock or something! The teachers told us that the traditional teaching style was to help us develop our understanding of Student Agency and managing our own learning, not someone else telling us what to do. Thank goodness we don't learn like that anymore!

Ruby Red Emotional Hook

Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had an a great holiday.

This Term our big idea is performance. We headed straight the the auditorium and did a fun drama warm up. It's kind of like paper scissors rock, but there are three character actions (we used a Wizard, Elf and Giant). You stand back to back with a buddy and on the count of three turn around to face each other as one of the characters. If you are matching you stay standing, and if not you sit down. As you can imagine with the whole syndicate (200 kids) it was very funny!

Then we had the amazing performance of 'Ruby Red' by our syndicate teachers.  None of them knew the story (except Miss G) so they came on and acted as a character as the story was narrated. They definitely took a responsible risk and found humour and delivered an amazing performance.

Then it was over to some children from each class to be the characters as we chose the other path of the story. Our very own Terado ended up being 'Locky' and he did a great job - especially his slow motion running!

This is the pick a path story for you to read. Make sure you click on the arrows and bubbles on the slide deck rather than the little slide arrows on the bottom left.

Next we did a performance challenge in different groups. One of the activities was to create a Freeze Frame from a moment in a Fairy Tale. Can you guess what is happening in each of these?

Lara is a Go For Gold Kid

On Friday Lara received the prestigious Go For Gold award at Assembly. Lara has had an amazing start to the year and is enjoying the opportunity to manage her own learning. #booooom #proudofyou

Wacky Hair Day and FUNembly

On Friday we had a Wacky Hair Day to raise money for 'Shave for a Cure.' As a school we raised just over $600. We had the Wacky Hair Day because Isaac in LAVA shaved his head this week for Shave for a cure in remembrance of his cousin Dom. These are some of our amazing hairstyles.

We also had a FUNembly. We had whole school Jump Jam in the hall first - then the teachers split us up into classes (a Junior, Middle and Senior class together). In our groups we buddied up with someone from another syndicate and did three rotations. There was heaps of cool things to do like; Gala Games, Fun Golf, Singing and Rythym, Paint Splatter Art, Face Painting, Target Practice and a Photo Booth. To finish off we had a daylight disco in the quad. It was #FUN!
